From fighting obesity to improving academic performance, physical education class is essential to the health and well-being of students. Gym class helps keep students active which can increase the flow of blood to the brain, which may increase growth in the brain's learning and memory center. Physical activity may also improve concentration and behavior. It helps to expose them to healthy activities and sports they may enjoy the rest of their lives. Gym class also gives students the opportunity to develop leadership skills and influence moral development. In addition, because it requires students work together, it can build social skills and teamwork abilities. It introduces goal-setting and can instill self-discipline.
Here at Hillcrest Elementary we teach a variety of sports, physical activities, and healthy eating habits. Students receive one hour a week of structured P.E. instruction. We encourage kids to stay active at home by playing games, going for a walk with their family, or participating in extracurricular sports.
